About ONO Organic Farms

Ono Farms

Established more than thirty years ago, ONO Organic Farms is a 30-acre, certified organic, family-owned and operated farm located on the southern slopes of Haleakala ("House of the Sun") volcano on the eastern edge of the legendary Hawaiian Island of Maui. Four generations of the Boerner family have been organic farmers in this lush jungle environment for sixty years.

Charles "Chuck" Boerner (see photo with wife, Lilly, and daughter, Autumn) says, "The key to our wealth is our health. We have been growing and eating organic ever since my grandfather converted the family. I have been farming here since I was a kid."

At age 95, Chuck's mother, Gertrude, is still in charge of selling the family's organic tropical fruit and rich organic coffee at a popular farmers market in the nearby town of Hana.

In addition to growing thousands of tropical fruit trees, Chuck and Lilly have raised five children at ONO Organic Farms. Son, Pueo, currently serves as Farm Manager. Daughter, Lilia, and twin-brother, Kale, were born in a small building among the papaya and banana trees. Lilia and best friend, Theresa, inspired the film, "Blue Crush" after being featured in the magazine, "Women Outside".

"Surf Life for Women" ran a feature article on the Boerner family that says, "Their house was built by the family. The electricity is solar powered, the water comes from a well, and rubbish is broken down into trash, burnables, recyclables, and compost. The farm is entirely organic; the only pest control is the spiders that have created magnificent webs in nearly every nook and cranny available. As cheesy as it may sound, being on the farm really felt like a union with nature." Ono Farms

One of the largest tropical fruit farms in the state of Hawaii, ONO Organic Farms grows and sells a wide variety of exotic fruits, cacao (chocolate), and Arabica estate coffee.

All of the produce is hand-picked for perfect ripeness and premium quality to produce the best and most delicious ("ono" in the Hawaiian language) produce for both retail and wholesale customers.

The Boerner family and ONO Organic Farms is frequently featured in newspaper and magazine articles, popular web sites, and television programs, including appearances on the Travel Channel and the Food Channel.

Chuck Boerner (pictured left with Chef Wolfgang Puck) is a leading expert on tropical organic agriculture and a featured speaker at workshops, schools, agricultural, and other special events. Charles Boerner Consultants provides expert consulting services for farmers in Hawaii and around the world. Recent consulting engagements include on-site visits to Panama, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Slovenia, and Ethiopia.
